Statement from Rep. Ahern on
governor’s
DUI sobriety checkpoint plan
"For years I have worked
to create safer communities by holding drunk drivers more accountable.
I’m pleased the governor is finally joining my efforts. Her DUI sobriety
checkpoints are a small step in the right direction. I hope she will
continue to support safer roads by supporting my legislation.
We must send a strong
message to people that driving under the influence will not be
overlooked. More importantly, we need to enforce these laws to keep
those that are convicted of driving under the influence off our roads.
Repeat offenders, who are let off with a slap on the wrist, are the ones
who harm innocent people.
In 2006, I sponsored a
bill that was signed into law that made a fourth DUI conviction within
ten years a felony.
While I’m pleased more
people have been taken off our roads, we must make the law even
stronger. This year, I am re-introducing House Bill 1190, which would
make a person’s third convicted DUI in seven years a felony. I hope the
governor will support this proposal as well.
Maybe now people will
think twice before making the choice to get behind the wheel while
impaired."
