Christopher serves in legislative page program
PAGE PHOTO RELEASE
Last week,
Rep. Judy Warnick,
R-Moses Lake, sponsored Natalie Christopher in the legislative page
program for the House of Representatives. Christopher is a freshman
at Capital High School and is the daughter of Chris and Lisa Christopher
of Olympia. she is also the niece of Tawnya Smith, assistant to Rep. Charles
Ross. Both her mother and aunt were pages in their youth.
"I was pleased Natalie could be a part of
a tradition that seems to exist in her family,"
Warnick said. "It is
great for our youth
to become aware of the legislative process and this provides them an
excellent opportunity to do so."
Page
responsibilities are varied and include delivering messages and
documents to legislators in their offices, in committee meetings and in
the House chambers during floor sessions. In addition to these duties,
they are required to continue their studies for two hours
during the day.
Students also take part in
page school where they write mock legislation and learn how a bill
becomes a law. Christopher enjoyed writing her own bill on handing out
candy in schools and acted as chair in her mock committee. She made a
lot of friends while in Olympia and would welcome the opportunity to be
a page again.
To become a page,
applicants must have a legislative sponsor and be between the ages of 14
and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For
